Modulation of motor cortical theta and gamma oscillations using phase-targeted, closed-loop optogenetic stimulation of local excitatory and inhibitory neurons.
In awake mice, we recorded 'theta' and 'gamma' brain waves, which are involved in movement control and learning. We observed the effect of closed-loop stimulation, where the phase of the wave cycle is monitored in real time and stimulation is automatically triggered at a chosen point in each wave. Activating excitatory or inhibitory neurons altered theta activity. The findings could help refine brain-stimulation strategies for treating neurological disorders.
